The Phantom of the Open

Maurice Flitcroft is a dreamer. A middle aged, working-class man who has tried his hand at everything–writing, painting, diving, songwriting–he dreams big, and encourages everyone around him to do the same.

1976 arrives and Maurice, now in his 40s with three adult sons and his loving wife Jean by his side, is staring down the barrel of possible unemployment as the shipyard industry becomes nationalized. But he is a man who doesn’t stay down for long andone day inspiration strikes him–in the form of a golf club. With encouragement from his wife, he applies to enter the British Open golf championship.

The only draw back of Maurice’s plan is that he has never played a round of golf in his life. With pluckiness, optimism and his twin sons–who happen to be Disco dancers–at his side,Maurice pulls off a series of stunning ,hilarious and heartwarming attempts to compete at the highest level of professional golf–all without success and much to the annoyance of the elitist golfing community.Based on the remarkable real life of a man who embodied the ethos of “it’s not the winning it’s the taking part”, PHANTOM OF THE OPEN is a story of hope, heart, aspirations and humanity that reminds us all to dream big, no matter how it turns out.
