Julianne Moore to Star in ‘After the Wedding’ Remake

Susanne Bier’s Danish-language original was nominated for an Oscar in 2007.

Oscar-winner Julianne Moore has joined the remake of Susanne Bier’s Academy-nominated Danish drama After the Wedding.

Coming from writer and director Bart Freundlich (WolvesThe Rebound, The Myth of Fingerprints), the reimagining will cast the two lead roles as women, creating a story of motherhood and family, while setting the story in and around New York.

Cornerstone Films has come on board to handle international sales and distribution and will commence sales at the European Film Market in Berlin later this month. CAA will oversee the US rights.

After the Wedding will be produced by Joel Michaels (Terminator SalvationBasic Instinct 2Lolita) and Silvio Muraglia (Black ButterflyAll Roads Lead to Rome) through Paradox Studios and production will begin this spring. Paradox Studios is also financing.

“We are overjoyed to have Bart as a partner in this project that has been a long time labour of love,” said Michaels and Muraglia. “He’s reimagined a brilliant retelling of Susanne Bier’s acclaimed and potent drama. We are further blessed to be working with Julianne Moore whose remarkable talent brings depth and sincerity to every role she portrays “

Cornerstone’s Alison Thompson and Mark Gooder added: “Bart has written an emotional powerhouse of a screenplay. It’s compelling and heart-breaking but incredibly human. It’s a standout piece and we are thrilled to be introducing it to buyers at Berlin.”

After the Wedding, which starred Mads Mikkelsen and Sidse Babett Knudsen and was a critical and popular success, was nominated for the best foreign-language Oscar in 2007, but lost out to The Lives of Others.

Freundlich is represented by Ken Stovitz at MGMT entertainment, while Moore is represented by CAA and Evelyn O’Neil of Management 360.
